HISTORY
of Fischbeker Reethen
In November 2015, the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg decided to develop the Fischbeker Reethen residential and commercial area and commissioned IBA Hamburg to deliver the project. The decision was triggered by the mandate from the Senate Journal ‘2015/1960 – Refugee accommodation with the prospect of housing’ (Annex 04-11) and the corresponding communication from the Senate to the city assembly to draw up a development plan for the area as soon as possible. According to the plan, the area was to be developed as a residential and commercial area with mainly publicly subsidised housing.
The development planning process began in 2016 and is the responsibility of the district of Harburg. The decision to go ahead with the project was made in 2018. An important milestone was reached in 2024 with the decision to open up the project for public inspection.
In September 2016, the well-known Dutch planning office KCAP, together with Kunst + Herbert, managed to gain the top position in the urbanistic landscape planning competition. Their winning proposal was translated into a functional plan in August 2018. IBA Hamburg is responsible for the district development and is supporting the follow-up of the functional plan. Major replanning became necessary in 2021 due to the administrative decision to include a school in Fischbeker Reethen.
An additional open-space planning competition with a subsequent negotiation procedure was launched in 2018 to take the design of the open spaces a step further. The Berlin-based firm relais Landschaftsarchitekten was awarded the contract for its design. RMPSL will support the detailed planning and execution of this design.
